Hosting: Not for the faint of heart!

welcome_language_wordcloudYou walk into a venue. A friendly person, that you may or may not have ever met throws you a warm greeting, welcoming you to the venue and making you feel suddenly at home. Those greetings come from the hosts and hostesses of the venues. They greet every single person who enters, they bid a fond farewell to those who say goodbye before they have to poof, and in between all that they manage to keep track of crashers who are returning, throw out “thank yous” for tips and field IMs from those who need help while at the show.

I used to take that warm welcome for granted. USED TO. That is a mistake I will never make again! I made a vague attempt at hosting a few nights ago at After Dark when the regular hostesses for that night were both ill. Meegan asked for the help and I thought, “How hard can it be?”. Several minutes into it I realized just how hard it could be! I was a nervous wreck watching the list, waiting to pounce a hello on anyone new that popped up. I said hello to several people that we well out of range of hearing me. I am also pretty sure that I said hello to a friend who was not even at the venue, but was online. I was a mess!

By the end of the hour that I helped out I was mentally shot! One hour was all it took and I was d-o-n-e! There are nights when the host and hostesses at After Dark work hours on end. Just the thought of that makes my eye all twitchy! How the heck do they keep up with it? Don’t their fingers get tired? When on Earth do they pee?!?!?!

A dramatic reenactment of me after one hour of attempting to host.

Next time you enter After Dark, or any venue for that matter, and you are greeted with that warm welcome from the host or hostess, take the time to throw a greeting back at them. They work harder than you know to assure that everyone has a great time. Maybe even take a second to drop them a thank you in IM. Let them know that they are appreciated for all the hard work that they do.

Dark, LadyGlory, Portia, I bow down to you for working your butts off! Never, ever, ever again will I take a gracious host or hostess for granted!
