Our Fearless Leader

I spend a lot of time being downright silly on this blog. I also spend a lot of time tooting the hell out of my own horn. Both are fun and that is why I do them. Every once in a while things need to get serious though. Fear not! There will be no lecturing or preaching. The Tyche Szondi soap-box is out away neatly under the bed, with the dust bunnies and the random odd sock. Things are about to get serious in the best way possible and you are going to like it!

Meegan Danitz

You probably know her as the “hello” that greets you when you land at After Dark. The backside that you slap to get your pixels shaking. The woman that kisses, hugs, spanks and on occasion snugglehumps as a thank you for tips to the venue. She is all of those things but she is also so much more! There are so many facets to this woman that if I did now know her personally I would think those pixels were made up of more than one person.

Owning a venue probably seems pretty glamorous, and it certainly is at times. Getting to see your club that you work so hard for full of people enjoying themselves and grooving along with you to music you love is an amazing thing. But there is a lot of hard work that goes into it and that hard work is often overlooked and rarely applauded. Meegan deserves to be applauded and I know damn well she will not toot her own horn so I am going to do it for her!

One of the most difficult and rewarding things that Meegan deal with as a live music venue owner is musicians. Have you ever heard the phrase “Working with musicians is like herding cats”? There is so much truth in that statement! While that is true, they are also the reason that Meegan does what she does. They are the love that makes her put so much labor into running a fantastic club. Meegan works tirelessly at putting together After Dark’s schedule of musicians, finding places to showcase new talent on the grid, filling last minute cancellations, dealing with any issues that may arise, be they personal or business.

Then there is that motely crew of a staff that she has to wrangle! Being part of that crew, I can attest to the fact that while we are a damn amazing group of people, we are not free of our “princess moments”. To be completely honest, it is very hard for me to be objective on this being one of the crew, and I cannot speak for the rest of the staff, but I know that I am not always the easiest person to work with and Meegan has had to talk me down from a ledge over silliness more than once!

Then there are the million of little things that Meegan deals with while hosting shows. Complaints from patrons, sometimes legitimate, other times things that are not within Meegan’s control. Either way, she deals with them with grace. Her goal is for people to have a great time while at After Dark and she will do anything that she is able to (within reason…don’t get carried away!) to ensure that it happens. In an evening of live music she is likely to field a load of IMs from patrons, questions, complaints, people looking for bookings, people just wanting to chit chat. And she fields all of those IMs while greeting every person that lands at After Dark, thanking for every tip and enjoying the heck out of herself!

After Dark is not the only passion that Meegan indulges in while in SL. (Minds…gutter…you know the drill! Stop it!) She dances for Guerilla Burlesque as a soloist and she has acted as a director for the troupe at times. This is a damned involved process. The soloist has to choose a song, develop a concept, build a set and choreograph a dance. It consumes a huge amount of time and in the end she has 3-5 minutes on stage in which she blows away the audience. Much like owning a venue, it is very much a labor of love and one that Meegan has a distinct talent for.

I would also like to point out that Meegan does all of the above while balancing her RL along the way. She takes care of her family, works an (often more than) full time job, and still finds time to do the things that she loves in SL. She is a owner, a friend, a therapist, a warden, a dancer and most importantly a damn good time. TOOT TOOT TOOT!!! Hear that? I am tooting the hell out of her horn, because she deserves it!

You want to know the best part of this post? Meegan has no idea what I am writing this week. I normally let her know, at least give her an overview, but I didn’t this time. She probably would have told me not to write this. She is too damn modest and I am not going to take that crap anymore! If your friends cannot give you a hearty pat on the back then who the hell can? Am I right?

In closing, Meegs, you are so loved and your hard work does not go unnoticed!

Tent Spankings?

Yes, I know that the title is odd. When you write your blog you can title it whatever you want! Now, before I get into the nuts and the bolts of this entry, I have a beef. Every single birthday that I have celebrated at After Dark has come with the promises of spankings, lots and lots of spankings. Picture people lining up to dish out spankings! Well, once again, the only spankings I got were from Meegan. I am just letting you all know that next year I expect more! You have one year to warm up your spanking skills!

Now that I have THAT out of the way….onto why we are really here!

After Dark through an amazing birthday for both me and Funkyfreddy Republic this past Tuesday. Freddy and I do not share a birthday but his is on the 24th and mine the 25th. Since After Dark is located on Idle Rogue, which is an Aussie sim, we kind of sort of do share a birthday when we are there. If you are thinking my math might be a little sketchy, or my reasoning slightly off then 1. You are wrong and 2. I have brought a graph that proves such.*

Everyone knows that graphs only ever show the truth. You know why? SCIENCE!!

Meegan wanted a theme for the party that would suit both of the guests of honor. It just so happens that I love camping and Freddy is an avid outdoorsman. So what better setting for the festivities than a campsite in the mountains?!? LadyGlory worked her magic and transformed After Dark into a gorgeous outdoor space complete with tents and mountains! There evening was a blast and the music was fantastic! I will stop my fingers from tapping the keyboard and let you see for yourself!

Twinghost kicking off the party!

Max Kleene rocking us!

PT Beardmore refusing to plat the birthday girl’s original request but redeeming himself by playing her 2nd one!

The great outdoors can indoors!

The birthday boy, Mr. Funkyfreddy Republic

Blues Heron wrapping up the fantastic night!

If you were not there, you missed one hell of a party, After Dark is keeping the décor up through this Sunday 1/29 due to the awesome response it received. So come by and check it out. Lounge in the tents. Gaze at the majestic scenery. Love the great outdoors while it is still indoors!

On a personal note, thank you to everyone for the great time that was had Tuesday night. The happy birthdays and well wishes were fantastic. You all sure know how to make a gal feel good!

♥ ~Ty

*Please note there is nothing scientific about this graph. It was just fun to make.

Out with the old and in with the new!

The holidays are over. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Solstice, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus or any other winter holiday of the sort, it is now behind us. As the new year approaches we welcome the time to look back at the past year and ahead at the fresh, new year for the blank page that it is.

First, my Christmas was very nice. Thank you for asking. I hope that your holiday celebration was just as nice. I hope that your family did not drive you any more crazy than normal, that you got everything you asked for and that you truly celebrated the real meaning of the season…….eating and drinking. Nary a Christmas has gone by since I reached drinking age that I was without a bourbon slush in my hand in the evening and a bloody mary in the morning! (I do jest and I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season!)

Before we look at the year that is to come, I find it only fitting to look back at the year that we just passed. We lost a lot this year. I am sure I need not remind you of the countless celebrities that we lost as well as the many outstanding musicians. We also lost a friend and supporter of live music earlier this year. Brandy will always be in our thoughts. Everyone deals with loss in their own way and the musicians that grace the stage at After Dark dealt with the passing of so many talents by doing what they do best, paying tribute through the music.

I do not want to dwell on the sadness and loss that was abundant this year, especially when there was so much silliness and good times that took place this year as well! There were parties, shenanigans and good times a plenty this past year. Let us take a brief walk down memory lane!

tit-face swapSaramarie was coerced into streaking during a Voodoo Shilton show. We are forever grateful to the one who did the coercing and to Derek, Sara’s manager, who provided the most wonderful photo ever!

After Dark was nominated, more than once for an Avi Choice award!

Meegan and Tyche jammed Minnesota style!

Oblee showed up more than once as a non puppet avi. Much to Ty’s dismay.

We had, at least in this bloggers opinion, the most unique and interesting griefing the night that the floor kept sliding.

Loads of new musicians rocked the stage, along with long standing regulars and those we hadn’t heard in a while!

And those are just a few of the highlights! There were endless conversations that out of context would completely boggle the mind. There were millions of dances as a result of millions of taps to Meegan’s behind. There were IMs of every type imaginable, and occasionally there were IMs accidentally typed in local, which then lead to more mind boggling conversations!

Thank you to everyone, the musicians, fans, regulars, people who randomly found After Dark in search and those who have no idea how they ended up there but had a good time anyway! Without all of you After Dark would be nothing! Join us as we embrace the newness of 2017 and make it one hell of a year!

I leave you with a picture that sums up just how awesome After Dark is. This picture was taken on September 28th. This was not a Halloween party, or October 28th when one might expect to see this kind of thing. No, this was just another night at After Dark.

‘Tis the Season!

merryThe holiday season is upon us, there is no denying that. Hell, in some places it seems to pop up right after July 4th in retail stores. With the holidays comes stress, worries and often some Bah Humbug! Whoever wrote the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” must have been high! We at After Dark want to help make your holidays more tolerable. In the spirit of the season I have taken it upon myself to rework the lyrics of some of our beloved Xmas tunes and give them a bit of an After Dark spin!

In the style of “Baby It’s Cold Outside”
I just want to stay…. (Baby it’s After Dark)
Don’t want to go away….(Baby it’s After Dark)
Meegan’s fierce ass is looking fine (I think that to myself all the time)
I really should go to bed (Psh, you can sleep when you’re dead)
Instead I’m rocking the dance floor (So why not dance a little bit more?)
Eff it, I’ll stay (I knew you would anyway)
‘Cause baby it’s After Dark!
In the style of “Jingle Bell Rock”

You might already be in love
All the musicians and regulars
Think Meegan;s pretty sweet
They like to tap her bottom
So her dances will move their feet.
Meegan is a kick ass dame
with an ass to match
She greets all as they come in
and even when they crash
Ohhhhhhh
Meegan the fierce assed owner
Runs a freaking awesome club
And if you’ve ever been there
You might already be in love
In the style of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”
I saw LG spelling my name wrong
When I landed at After Dark last night
She knew I saw the misspell
But she said what the hell
And went on with her hosting gig
which she does so well!

Festive as fu…..uh….fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, right? Need some more spirit of the season? We have sooo got you covered! This Sunday December 18th, After Dark Lounge will be hosting a Christmas PJ Party! There will be prizes for festive jammies. Linden prizes, you ask…oh HO HO HO No! Gag gift prizes. Tyche will be picking then out so chances are they will be rude, crude and possibly offensive! If that is not reason enough to be there then you might just be a Scrooge! And now I leave you with one of the most celebrated sayings of the season……

It’s the thought that counts!

we-hold-these-truths-to-be-self-evident-cover-620x350There are some very obvious truths in the world. Things that cannot be denied. You don’t have to have money to be happy. You don’t have to have a great voice to sing in the shower. You don’t have to be rich to be my girl. You don’t have to watch Dynasty to have an attitude. Just leave it all………and there I go getting off track. The point I am trying to get is that you don’t have to win the top prize to know that you are doing a good job, or to write an acceptance speech. Especially when you write for a blog!

Before the absolute silliness commences, I need to get serious. Everyone at After Dark would like to congratulate all of the nominees and  winners of the Avi Choice Awards. In case you missed the results, we didn’t take home any trophies, but we did make it to the finals for Favorite Live Venue! Thank you so much to everyone who voted and to all of our musicians and regulars that are just such damn amazing people. All of you  put us in the top 5 in a sea of amazing nominees! That alone proves how many awesome people come to After Dark Lounge!

Ok, now for the silliness!

Had After Dark Lounge won for favorite Live music venue, I would like to think that it would have gone down a little like this.

MC: “And the Avi Choice Award goes to…….After Dark Lounge!  *massive applause* After Dark Lounge is not able to join us this evening because, well, it is a building and does not get around too often. Thankfully, through the magic of modern technology we have After Dark via Skype to accept the award”

*camera pans to gigantic screen above the presenters. After Dark Lounge comes into view. A booming voice is heard*

“It is a pleasure and an honor to be receiving such a prestigious award. There are so many to thank, I do not even know where to begin! I supposed I should start with Meegan Danitz. Meegan, you are the platform beneath my structure. I would be nothing were it not for you and your love of live music and your commitment to the live music scene in Secondlife. When I was just a tiny prim I dreamed of greatness, but never did I know to what a level that greatness would reach. I am forever in debt to you Meegan and I hope I am not relegated to the deep dark recesses of your inventory anytime soon.

Next I need to think TheaDee for making me gorgeous. You gave me my first “look” and you keep me hip, hot and current. You are a miracle worker and without you I would be nothing more than an empty brick square.

Speaking of making me look pretty, LadyGlory…… You get me all dolled up for theme nights and let me pretend I am a different building for a short while. Also to LG and Portia, Dark, and Shanny, you all make people love me. You make them feel welcome from the second they land on my gorgeous hardwood floors. You make them want to come see me.

And to those regulars and all of the many musicians……It is a pleasure to have you all inside of me. I have had more musicians inside me than The Madison Square Garden and I love it.  I know that sometimes it can get a little tight inside, but those are the nights I love the most. Knowing that people are ass to elbow inside of me and enjoying the hell out of themselves make me feel completely full, not just in my cavernous space but also in my heart.

There have been times when I was scared. When I thought the music was gone and never coming back. *Cue rain and gentle sniffles* When Meegs got sick…..every year during Burn……when Meegs work was being a total douchebag…….The music always came back though, and the fans returned and my purpose as a venue was once again fulfilled.

Tyche….how could I forget Tyche? You were unexpected, loud, bossy and boisterous. For shit’s sake, you write about me damn near every week. I can admit when I am wrong and filing that restraining order against you was stupid of me and having it repealed was one of the smartest things I ever did.

Last but not least I would like to thank the higher beings…..the Lindens. Your world lets me be me. Hell, it lets me be, period! This one is for you!

Thank you all! After Dark OUT! *drops the mic*

NSFRC (Not suitable for red carpet)

The Avi Choice awards are being handed out this Sunday at 1pm SLT. I am positive that my readers are sick and damn tired of all of the Avi Choice Awards talk. First I harp to get you to nominate, then I get on your butts about voting for the awards and now I STILL want to talk about them?!?! Yep, and I am going to. That is the beauty of writing, I get to write whatever the heck I want!

party-time

Though there are a lot of nominees among the After Dark Lounge crew, none of us will be attending the awards themselves. Some have conflicting things going on, some just don’t have a thing to wear and one, who will not be named is banned for life.*

There was discussion of having an award show listening party, but as per usual there was so much arguing that the whole idea was thrown out the window. Dark can’t have dairy, and Shanny insists on having queso and cheese sticks. Portia is embarrassed to be around people when she listens to award shows. I would be too if I screamed the kind of obscenities she screams when her favorite does not win. LG and Meegan were going to wear the same dress, neither would budge and that led to a “Yea, well my ass looks better than yours” kind of argument that resulted in tears. My tears, because listening to those two argue is enough to make you crazy! As for me, well, seems no one wants to come hang out with the only sane one of the damn group.

The look I will be going for Sunday afternoon. minus the baking whatnot and plus booze!

Long story short, I have no idea what the rest of the After Dark Lounge crew will be doing when the Avi Choice Awards are handed out, but I know what I will be doing! I will be sitting in my living room, in my comfy fleece pants (Sunday is a comfy pant day after all). a football jersey (Umm….Sunday!), fuzzy slippers (it is winter and cold here!) and a tiara. Why the tiara? Jeez people! I t is an award show! I want to feel a little fancy! So anyway, I will be all geared up, vodka and OJ close at hand, my ear glued to the broadcast, while the football game is on in the background. Hey, I love awards shows but I also love my football!

No matter who wins, it is really an honor to be nominated. Thank you to everyone who submitted nominations and voted. I hope that on award day your pants are comfy and your favorites bring home the prize! So pinkies up, cupcakes! It is time to get your fancy on!

♥ Tyche

*Not really, but if anyone was, let’s be honest, it would be Meegan

A lesson in patience…….aka Tyche waits for the Avi Choice Award nominations to be announced!

The Bloggess Bitch is BACK!!

waiting-sucksRemember a few weeks ago when I took it upon myself to talk your gentle little hands and walk you through the process of nominating for the Avi Choice Awards? Whelp, I was hoping to be sitting here this evening writing a thank you to all of those who voted and being super stoked that we received nominations. But…………(extra long dramatic pause)………..THE NOMS ARE NOT UP YET!  So instead I will be pissing and moaning about that. Sure, they said they will be listed on the 3rd of November, no later than midnight and it is only 9pm but COME ON!! They obviously have no idea how impatient I am. What? It is not all about me and what I need to keep me happy? Well fine then!

*runs to see if the noms are up yet….nothing*

patienceIn all seriousness though, whether we receive nominations of not, I want to thank everyone who took the time to nominate. It was not a difficult process, but it was a little time-consuming and to those who took that time, you rock and we love you just a teensy bit more than those who did not. We do love all of you, but you know damn well that everyone has their favorites!

*runs to see if the noms are up yet……still nothing*

BUT WAIT!!!!

There they are! WOOHOO!!

squee After Dark is nominated for Favorite Live Music Venue!!! Holy crap on a cracker! Oh! Oh! Oh! But there is more…this fine piece of journalistic wonder that you are reading and the website that is rests its fine words on is nominated for Favorite Blog or Website, Overall! Sweet sassy molassey! Yours truly was also nominated for Favorite Blogger, overall. I am humbled as fu……..fudge by this! Woah! And this just in! I am literally typing this as the info is coming in to me from my close sources, both Shanny and LadyGlory have received nominations for Favorite Club or Venue Host or Hostess!  Paint me green and call me Gumby! You will not believe the number of amazing musicians that have graced After Dark’s stage that are nominated!

I could play it all cool and preach about how awards are popularity contests and blah, blah, blah, but this is really freaking exciting! To have so many aspects of After Dark Lounge nominated is giving me the warm fuzzies. Yes, it is a popularity contest, but it is one voted on by the people of Second Life and a person or place does not get popular by half-assing things. Being recognized for the hard work that goes into it all is pretty dang amazing! Shut the front door!

Once again, another big THANK YOU to those who took the time to nominate!

vote-now

Now it is time to vote! I know, I know, you thought your part was done and you could just sit back and relax and watch the whole thing play out, but once again it is time to make your voice heard! Again I will make it easy for you. Click HERE to vote for The Arts and HERE to vote for SLife. The rest is easy peasy!

Jam-a-lam-a-ding-dong!

The Twin Cities jam has come and gone and the After Dark Lounge crew was there to represent! Meegan and Tyche rolled up in to that mother like a couple of bosses! You know, the kind of bosses that get stranded at the liquor store, in the pouring rain, with a box of booze and not a single damn cup…..yep…..BOSSES!

Now, as anyone who has attended a jam will tell you, most of what happens at a jam stays at the jam, and with good reason! Well, several reasons actually, but the main reason, at least from this bloggers end, is that lots of the jam is kind of a blur. A massive blur of cocktails, hugs, amazing music, new friends and old. Legit, if you are a fan of the SL music scene and you have never been to a jam you owe it to yourself to get to one, It is an experience unlike anything else and it is nothing short of amazing.

The level of talent that was representing at this jam was insane. Completely and utterly INSANE! Bonkers I tell you! It was so amazing to get to meet and listen to so many fantastic musicians! Since I am sure that you are all avid readers of the blog, you are well aware that there were a few musicans present who are on regular rotation at After Dark. Grif Bamaisin, Lyndon Heart, Max Kleen and Voodoo Shilton…..all live in the flesh and offering great hugs and even better music! Rather than blather on and on I will share a few pics from the amazing time that was had!

img_0512

Was the jam held at Linden Labs? OMG!!

edited-dolls

Alotta Fagina and Sir Cocks a Lot……Yes, it was that kind of party!

The reenactment of the Gimme a Break Photo….minus a Meegan.

There are not a lot of pictures from the jam…..because WHAT HAPPENS AT THE JAM STAYS AT THE JAM! Everything except Jambola, which both Meegan and Ty managed to contract.

One last thing that is not at all jam related. They are doing one final Avi Choice Awards at the end of the year. Nominations are being accepted right now. Make sure you take a few minutes and submit your nominations! It only takes a few minutes! https://avichoiceawards.com/   <=====Right there! DOO EEEET!

Gimme a break!

I know that you all race to the After Dark calendar every day as you log into SL to see what sort of craziness and mayhem will be happening there/ Ok, ok, some of you probably rely on inworld search, that is fine too. I am here to warn you that when you look for Sunday’s events at After Dark Lounge you will find NOTHING! Not a g-danged thing will be listed. You may feel a bit of a panic when you see this. I am trying to keep you from having to breathe into a paper bag. Let’s take a cleansing breath….in your nose, out your mouth…..there we go.

partybreakSo, yes. There will be no shows at After Dark this Sunday, but for the best damn reason EVER! Meegan and Ty will be at the Twin Cities Jam!! As if that were not enough to make the jam the coolest thing ever, we will be there with several of After Dark’s regular musicians! Voodoo Shilton! Max Kleene! Grif Bamaisin! Lyndon Heart! Ahhhhhh!!!!! And those are just the regular musicians that grace our stage! It will be an epic weekend. There will be insanity, booze and probably a poor decision or two!

I have taken the liberty of making a mock-up of a photo that NEEDS to happen at the jam. You hear that? This is not an option, it NEEDS to happen. Now I just need someone to remind me of it when I am several cocktails deep!

gimmeabreak

We will return to our regularly scheduled lineup on Tuesday September 20th!

What it takes

loveofmusicWay back when I was a casual observer of the Secondlife music scene I used to walk into a venue packed with people and think to myself “Damn! Whoever runs this place must be rolling in the Linden!” Oh how niave I was! When you walk into a place and you see a metric butt load of people there enjoying a show it is an easy conclusion to draw.

Now that I work for a venue owner I know just how wrong that was. Live music venues in SL close all the time. There are several reasons for that, but the number one reason is financial. It s a part of the scene that no one really wants to think about, but it is vital to keeping live music in SL. Everytime that a host or venue owner thanks you for a tip or tells you that your support goes to helping keep live music alive in SL, they mean every word of it.

Take a second and think about the cost that can go into one evening of live music. I honestly do not know exact numbers and I am probably underestimating but still. Say a venue pays a musician $3,000L to play an hour and they have 4 musicians playing at their venue that night. Right off the bat you are talking $12,000L. Then you have to take into consideration the host/hostesses. Let’s say they make $250L and hour, and there are two of them for the 4 hours. We are now up to $14,000L. This does not even take into consideration rent or tier, time spent booking, decorating (in the case of special events) and doing promo for the shows. Remember, that is just one night. On a good night for a venue, tipwise, the owner might recoup 50% of the evening’s operating costs. Most nights that number is more like 25-30%.

This is not to make people feel sorry for venue owners to to guilt people into tipping. People who decide to open a live music venue in SL know that they are not going to make money. They do it for the love of the music and the pride in having a place that people love to come. I only wanted to write about it because I feel it is something that people should know and I did not have a clue till I started working for a venue.

One last thing…..DO NOT EVER let a lack of $L keep you from attending a live show in SL. Yes, if you have the means to tip it is amazing and helpful and helps make sure there are places that we can go to listen to awesome live music, but sometimes things are tight or there is a huge hair sale, or maybe you lost all your $L in a game of poker. No matter the reason, being there to show that you support live music means a lot too!

Don’t worry, this is not the start of a series of blogs on the financial state of SL. No, no, no. I promise I will be back to sarcasm and silliness next time!
