Jam it Damn It: Some Simple Rules for the First Time Jammer

It has been nearly a month since the Mid-Atlantic Jam, and some of your might be sick and damn tired of reading posts about it, but as I have said many a time before, when you write your own blog you can write about whatever the hell you want. I am choosing to do one more post on the jam! Even though the Mid-Atlantic has passed, I know that there are a lot of After Dark VIPs planning on attending the Dallas jam coming up in October. For some of you it might be your first jam and I am here to help!

The following post could go by a lot of different titles. SL Music Jams for Dummies. So You Want to Attend an SL Music Jam: A Beginner’s Guide. Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About SL Music Jams but Were Afraid to Ask. SL Music Jam 101: A Primer. The list could do on and on, but I have decided to go with Jam it Damn It: Some Simple Rules for the First Time Jammer.

Note: There will be a crap ton of things that I leave out here, I am not writing a novel for crap’s sake! If you feel that I have neglected to mention something that you feel is super important feel free to add it in the comments! I would also like to note, that these rules apply to the jam itself. It is assumed that you are able to figure out how to register and get there on your own!

Jam it Damn It: Some Simple Rules for the First Time Jammer.

Congratulations! You have committed to attending a SL music jam! You are in for the time of your life, assuming that you enjoy amazing music and fun people! Here are a few “rules” that can help you make the most of your experience!

  1. Be prepared to meet lots of new people. Some you may know from Secondlife. Some you may have never heard of before. All of them have one thing in common though, a love of music and that alone makes them pretty awesome! “But Tyche, my ex-lover/crush/frenemy or any other number of kinds of people will be there and that makes me nervous!” Suck it up buttercup! Here is a totally cool thing that happens at jams, people just generally get along! So what if you have a past with someone, either embrace it or let it fall by the wayside, but do not let it be the focus of your weekend!
  2. You don’t have to drink to have a good time…….BUT, should you decide to imbibe, make sure that you stock up as soon as you arrive. Constant runs to the store for more booze is a bummer.
  3. Brace yourself to meet people that you see as rock stars, Most of them are really damn modest and seem to not understand why people get all “Squeeeee” when they meet them. Just make sure you meet them! You can do this one of two ways. You can talk the calm on the outside but screaming on the inside approach. OR You can do what I do and basically attack. Let me give you an example: At the Mid-Atlantic Jam I saw Twinghost standing in the hallway right after he arrived. Poor man still had his gear on his back. I, not casually at all, slapped Harley Wytchwood on the back and pointed. She turned, gasped “Is that…”. I nodded and bolted for the door. Nearly trampling Voodoo Shilton, I got all up in Twinghost’s face and squealed “I am so excited to meet you!!!!”
  4. Let your fangirl/boy flag fly! If you are a huge fan of someone, let them know! Sit on the floor RIGHT in front of the performance area when they are performing. Applaud extra loud. Sing along to their tunes that you adore. If that is not your style then just make sure that you take the time to tell them how much you appreciate their work in a more demure manner.
  5. Don’t over do it. This rule applies to so many aspects of jamming but I would like to concentrate on two. Partying: party on, yo, but know when to say when, You should still have the ability to drag yourself back to your room at the end of the night. And for the love of all that is good, don’t let the booze turn you into a blubbering mess! The only tears that should be seen at a jam are tears of sheer joy! Overzealous fanning: Be a fan. Show you love. Don’t be clingy. Don’t bogart a musician’s time. Chances are there are a lot of people who want a chance to have their few minutes to hang with that same musician.
  6. HAVE FUN! Jams are what you make them! If you are game to have a good time, then a good time will be had! Relax, let your hair down, groove to the sweet, sweet tunes!

It is as simple as that! OMG! There is one thing I forgot and it is merely a personal belief of mine, but I think many would agree. Gentlemen, a speedo is NEVER a good idea for a jam…..EVER!

Jelly Don’t Shake Like That!

May has arrived! That means one very special thing! Spring has arrived? Pffft, I don’t know about where you are from, but spring seemed to arrive here in freaking February this year! Nope, we don’t give a rat’s patootie that spring has sprung. May means a short break for After Dark! Calm yourselves. I said SHORT break, and it is for the best reason ever……..IT’S JAM TIME!!!!

Meegan, LadyGlory, and yours truly, Tyche, will be attending the Mid-Atlantic Jam in Baltimore, MD from 5/18 to 5/21! This will be the third year After Dark takes a short break for people to get their jam on. Meegan and Ty attended the Twin Cities Jam in 2016 and the Mid-Atlantic Jam in 2015. This year LG will be making the trip as well and it will be nothing short of EPIC!!!

It will not just be us ladies there, oh heck no, there will be a plethora of musical talent there. Honestly, it cannot be a jam without there being amazing tunes to jam to!! Among the talent that will be there for our jamming pleasure (Yes, I am fully aware I just said “jamming pleasure”) will be After Dark regulars Voodoo Shilton, Grif Bamaisin, Cellshader, Hunson Abadeer, TwinGhost Ronas and last but not least, the man who has probably attended more SL music jams that any other musician, Max Kleene!

As I did last year, I have taken it upon myself to flex my artistic license and dust off my mad photo editing skills to bring you what might be the best thing you have ever seen. Through the magic of digital editing I present to you the group hug that will be happening at the jam! If that isn’t the most epic group hug, I don’t know what is! And I assure you that I will be doing my best to have this fake photo reenacted in real life!

Now that the silliness is finished, on to business. After Dark will be on hiatus from Wednesday May 17th to Monday May 22nd. We will be back to bringing you the outstanding music that you have come to know and love so well on Tuesday May 23rd!

Please try not to miss us too much, We know it is hard, but everyone needs a little break sometimes. It is not you, it is us, we swear! Remember, if you love something, set it free to jam, and if it returns to you then you know that love is real!

Out with the old and in with the new!

The holidays are over. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Solstice, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus or any other winter holiday of the sort, it is now behind us. As the new year approaches we welcome the time to look back at the past year and ahead at the fresh, new year for the blank page that it is.

First, my Christmas was very nice. Thank you for asking. I hope that your holiday celebration was just as nice. I hope that your family did not drive you any more crazy than normal, that you got everything you asked for and that you truly celebrated the real meaning of the season…….eating and drinking. Nary a Christmas has gone by since I reached drinking age that I was without a bourbon slush in my hand in the evening and a bloody mary in the morning! (I do jest and I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season!)

Before we look at the year that is to come, I find it only fitting to look back at the year that we just passed. We lost a lot this year. I am sure I need not remind you of the countless celebrities that we lost as well as the many outstanding musicians. We also lost a friend and supporter of live music earlier this year. Brandy will always be in our thoughts. Everyone deals with loss in their own way and the musicians that grace the stage at After Dark dealt with the passing of so many talents by doing what they do best, paying tribute through the music.

I do not want to dwell on the sadness and loss that was abundant this year, especially when there was so much silliness and good times that took place this year as well! There were parties, shenanigans and good times a plenty this past year. Let us take a brief walk down memory lane!

tit-face swapSaramarie was coerced into streaking during a Voodoo Shilton show. We are forever grateful to the one who did the coercing and to Derek, Sara’s manager, who provided the most wonderful photo ever!

Meegan and Tyche jammed Minnesota style!

img_0505

Oblee showed up more than once as a non puppet avi. Much to Ty’s dismay.

We had, at least in this bloggers opinion, the most unique and interesting griefing the night that the floor kept sliding.

Loads of new musicians rocked the stage, along with long standing regulars and those we hadn’t heard in a while!

And those are just a few of the highlights! There were endless conversations that out of context would completely boggle the mind. There were millions of dances as a result of millions of taps to Meegan’s behind. There were IMs of every type imaginable, and occasionally there were IMs accidentally typed in local, which then lead to more mind boggling conversations!

Thank you to everyone, the musicians, fans, regulars, people who randomly found After Dark in search and those who have no idea how they ended up there but had a good time anyway! Without all of you After Dark would be nothing! Join us as we embrace the newness of 2017 and make it one hell of a year!

I leave you with a picture that sums up just how awesome After Dark is. This picture was taken on September 28th. This was not a Halloween party, or October 28th when one might expect to see this kind of thing. No, this was just another night at After Dark.

‘Tis the Season!

merryThe holiday season is upon us, there is no denying that. Hell, in some places it seems to pop up right after July 4th in retail stores. With the holidays comes stress, worries and often some Bah Humbug! Whoever wrote the song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” must have been high! We at After Dark want to help make your holidays more tolerable. In the spirit of the season I have taken it upon myself to rework the lyrics of some of our beloved Xmas tunes and give them a bit of an After Dark spin!

In the style of “Baby It’s Cold Outside”
I just want to stay…. (Baby it’s After Dark)
Don’t want to go away….(Baby it’s After Dark)
Meegan’s fierce ass is looking fine (I think that to myself all the time)
I really should go to bed (Psh, you can sleep when you’re dead)
Instead I’m rocking the dance floor (So why not dance a little bit more?)
Eff it, I’ll stay (I knew you would anyway)
‘Cause baby it’s After Dark!
In the style of “Jingle Bell Rock”
After Dark
After Dark
After Dark rocks
People go their to shake their derrieres
Lots of great music and people to perv
Ask one to dance if you get the nerve
After Dark Lounge is the best lounge
for dancing cares away
Live musician will have you wishing
You didn’t have to work the next day
Get yourself to After Dark
Tap Meegan’s tush
And totally ignore the clock
Because After Dark
Because After Dark
Because After Dark ROCKS!
merry2
In the style of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”
You know Shanny and LG and Tyche and Portia. Dark Phaeton (the man dancing with no shirt on)
But do you recall….the one who pays them all?
Meegan the fierce assed owner
Runs a freaking awesome club
And if you’ve ever been there
You might already be in love
All the musicians and regulars
Think Meegan;s pretty sweet
They like to tap her bottom
So her dances will move their feet.
Meegan is a kick ass dame
with an ass to match
She greets all as they come in
and even when they crash
Ohhhhhhh
Meegan the fierce assed owner
Runs a freaking awesome club
And if you’ve ever been there
You might already be in love
In the style of “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”
I saw LG spelling my name wrong
When I landed at After Dark last night
She knew I saw the misspell
But she said what the hell
And went on with her hosting gig
which she does so well!
pjparty
Festive as fu…..uh….fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, right? Need some more spirit of the season? We have sooo got you covered! This Sunday December 18th, After Dark Lounge will be hosting a Christmas PJ Party! There will be prizes for festive jammies. Linden prizes, you ask…oh HO HO HO No! Gag gift prizes. Tyche will be picking then out so chances are they will be rude, crude and possibly offensive! If that is not reason enough to be there then you might just be a Scrooge! And now I leave you with one of the most celebrated sayings of the season……

Jam-a-lam-a-ding-dong!

The Twin Cities jam has come and gone and the After Dark Lounge crew was there to represent! Meegan and Tyche rolled up in to that mother like a couple of bosses! You know, the kind of bosses that get stranded at the liquor store, in the pouring rain, with a box of booze and not a single damn cup…..yep…..BOSSES!

Now, as anyone who has attended a jam will tell you, most of what happens at a jam stays at the jam, and with good reason! Well, several reasons actually, but the main reason, at least from this bloggers end, is that lots of the jam is kind of a blur. A massive blur of cocktails, hugs, amazing music, new friends and old. Legit, if you are a fan of the SL music scene and you have never been to a jam you owe it to yourself to get to one, It is an experience unlike anything else and it is nothing short of amazing.

The level of talent that was representing at this jam was insane. Completely and utterly INSANE! Bonkers I tell you! It was so amazing to get to meet and listen to so many fantastic musicians! Since I am sure that you are all avid readers of the blog, you are well aware that there were a few musicans present who are on regular rotation at After Dark. Grif Bamaisin, Lyndon Heart, Max Kleen and Voodoo Shilton…..all live in the flesh and offering great hugs and even better music! Rather than blather on and on I will share a few pics from the amazing time that was had!

img_0512

Was the jam held at Linden Labs? OMG!!

edited-dolls

Alotta Fagina and Sir Cocks a Lot……Yes, it was that kind of party!

img_0505

The reenactment of the Gimme a Break Photo….minus a Meegan.

There are not a lot of pictures from the jam…..because WHAT HAPPENS AT THE JAM STAYS AT THE JAM! Everything except Jambola, which both Meegan and Ty managed to contract.

One last thing that is not at all jam related. They are doing one final Avi Choice Awards at the end of the year. Nominations are being accepted right now. Make sure you take a few minutes and submit your nominations! It only takes a few minutes! https://avichoiceawards.com/   <=====Right there! DOO EEEET!

Gimme a break!

I know that you all race to the After Dark calendar every day as you log into SL to see what sort of craziness and mayhem will be happening there/ Ok, ok, some of you probably rely on inworld search, that is fine too. I am here to warn you that when you look for Sunday’s events at After Dark Lounge you will find NOTHING! Not a g-danged thing will be listed. You may feel a bit of a panic when you see this. I am trying to keep you from having to breathe into a paper bag. Let’s take a cleansing breath….in your nose, out your mouth…..there we go.

partybreakSo, yes. There will be no shows at After Dark this Sunday, but for the best damn reason EVER! Meegan and Ty will be at the Twin Cities Jam!! As if that were not enough to make the jam the coolest thing ever, we will be there with several of After Dark’s regular musicians! Voodoo Shilton! Max Kleene! Grif Bamaisin! Lyndon Heart! Ahhhhhh!!!!! And those are just the regular musicians that grace our stage! It will be an epic weekend. There will be insanity, booze and probably a poor decision or two!

I have taken the liberty of making a mock-up of a photo that NEEDS to happen at the jam. You hear that? This is not an option, it NEEDS to happen. Now I just need someone to remind me of it when I am several cocktails deep!

We will return to our regularly scheduled lineup on Tuesday September 20th!

Just Hitched!

congratshtiched

What do you so when a venue owner runs off and gets hitched with no pomp and circumstance? You bring the pomp and circumstance to her and her new wife by throwing a big ‘ol fashioned, tacky as can be wedding party! If Meegan and Rebecca thought that they could get away with eloping and not be dealt a good dose of silliness, they were sadly mistaken!

The party had everything one could want at a tacky, somewhat redneck, back yard reception…and so much more! A pickup truck with cans hanging from the tailgate? CHECK! Gigantic pretend pictures from the wedding day? CHECK! More amazing music than one can shake a shotgun at? CHECK! Watermelon and lemonade left over from July 4th? CHECK! A keg full of cold brew, complete with rainbow colored plastic cups? CHECK! Way too bright rainbow wedding cake? CHECK! Dancing girls? CHECK! Totally inappropriate wedding apparel on both brides? CHECK! Lots of love from friends and possibly people who are just trying to score an invite to what will be the wedding of the decade even though the brides are already married? CHECK!  All of that and so, so much more!

So much can be said about the level of fun that was had at After Dark last Sunday, but I will just let the pictures tell the story! A big thank you to Raspbury Rearwin, Voodoo Shilton and Red Heaven for providing the musical entertainment for the evening!

One thing of note, in case you were not there and since it is hard to read in the pictures, Rebecca is wearing a tshit that says “Save a horse, ride the bride”. And that is pure klass!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the love of these two amazing women. It was one hell of a night and a total blast! One more special thanks to Voodoo, Shanny and LG for helping Ty pull off the surprise dance for the brides!

Ty’s Choice Awards 2016!!

Disclaimer:
This is not meant to belittle the Avi Choice Awards. Like everything else that I write, this is written in the spirit of silliness and fun!

TCALadies and gentlemen! Boys and girls! Children of all ages!

Oh wait….wrong pomp for the circumstance!

**DRUMROLL**

Booming announcer voice: “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the second annual Ty’s Choice Awards! And now…your hostess with the mostest, Tyche Szondi!”

Thank you disembodied booming voice! Welcome everyone to the second annual Ty’s Choice Awards! Can you believe it has already been a year? Can you believe that I have been permitted by management to host again this year?!?

Speaking of management, we are thrilled to have the marvelous Meegan Danitz in attendance this year, Following last year’s series of “wardrobe malfunctions” she has decided to make sure that nothing of that nature will occur this year. I am sure you all got a good look at her on the red carpet, I honestly did not know that someone could look so stunning in a full length mumu! mumumeegan

Ahhh……Ty’s Choice….MY Choice…the only award that is given completely arbitrarily based on the opinion of one person, There is not panel of judges, there is no selection committee, there is just me and whatever strikes my fancy! It happens to be my most favorite awards show of the year, and I hope it is in at least your top ten!

But I digress! Some of the awards require a bit of explanation this year, Why you ask? Because I happen to like catchy names and when one fits and makes sense in my head I realize that it might not make so much sense to everyone else. If they do immediately make sense to you, you might want to seek professional help! Oh! And for those of you who are paying attention, you might have noticed that the award itself has changed this year. I certainly think it is a better representation of the award’s namesake!

On with the show!

As was the format last year, I will not be boring you with long-winded attempts at making you laugh or over produced musical numbers. We are here to find out who won!  Now, When you read the list you need to read them in an announcer’s voice. “And the TCA for ________ goes to_____!” Extra points if you read them aloud, in public and get strange looks from people around you!

winnerThe Bipolar Set Award (Best at taking you from laughing to tearing up in the matter of a song.) : SaraMarie Philly

The “Caution! Wet Floor!” Award (Because sometimes that voice requires the use of added safety measures!): Twinghost Ronas

The “SURPRISE!” Award (Most likely to refuse to play a song for over a year then whip it out (the song you perverts!) for someone’s birthday): PT Beardmore

congratulations-4308

Let’s hear a round of applause for all of our winners! Remember, there are not losers at After Dark Lounge…..well, there was that one guy that one time, but that is what the “block” feature is for!

The after party is calling and the booze is flowing. I must apologize for the lack of red carpet pictures this year. It came down to hire a photographer or have an open bar and I think that we can all agree which if the more important of the two!

Much love and many congratulations!

~Ty

It is an honor just to be nominated…..

……but it would be total kick ass to win!

AWARD

Unfortunately, this award is not one of the Avi Choice award categories!

The crew at After Dark is honored and humbled to announce that the club has received not one, but TWO nominations for the Avi Choice Awards! Not only that, but our amazing owner, her royal fierceness, Miss Meegan Danitz has been nominated as well!

After Dark is nominated for Favorite Stage or Theater Set Design, because, let’s face it, the place is gorgeous, warm, inviting and the perfect setting for spending an evening listening to your favorite live music! The venue is also up for Favorite Venue, Sr (in operation more than a year). Are they calling After Dark old? Heck yes it has been around (Not “around the block”, c’mon people! This is serious biness!) and in a place where live venues come and go it really is a great honor to be among those that have stood the test of time!

The lovely and talented Miss Meegan Danitz is nominated for Favorite Dance Choreographer. She very modestly claims that she does not belong in that category, but if you have ever seen her perform on the stage, you know that she most definitely does!

We are also pleased to announce that several of our regular performers have been nominated as well!

Max Kleene: Favorite Acoustic Singer, Favorite Rock Singer, Favorite Pop Singer, Favorite Male Performer
